Continuing this week’s theme of domesticated animals, I am focussing on poultry in Teso in north eastern Uganda today. They are a very important source of a little extra income. They are also killed to eat when visitors come and are often given as a gift. I have had so many chickens over the years! The chickens are not of any particular breed, so come in a wonderful range of colours and patterns. Hens are excellent mothers, protecting their chicks from birds of prey and stray dogs. Turkeys and ducks are also kept by a few people.
- Hens often lay their eggs and sit in some unusual places around the homestead!
- Sometimes baskets are hung under the eaves of their round grass-thatched houses where they are safe
- A family resting together
- I have never seen chicks on the back of hens before
- This half-grown chick is pecking at cassava laid out to dry
- Uganda: Poultry
- These appear to be hybrid hens
- Muscovy ducks originate in South America
- Turkeys
