This is a quote from the novel “Incognito” by Petru Dumitriu.

Dumitriu (1924-2002) was a Romanian-born novelist who experienced the horrors of communist oppression and war. He also lived in Germany and France and was multilingual. “Incognito” is well worth reading, one of the most moving and influential books I have read.
