Sclater’s (or Blue-eyed) Lemur is the only blue-eyed mammal apart from humans. However, it was only the baby’s eyes which looked blue to me. Males are black while the females are a striking ginger colour.

We were fortunate to see them, thanks to our guide Patrick Andrianantenaina who has been working with a small remote community encouraging them to protect these very rare and beautiful lemurs on the edge of extinction. Bringing tourists is the incentive they need to value them and their habitat.
