POST-ELECTION VIOLENCE IN UGANDA

It is with a very heavy heart that millions of us say to the international community, governments, diplomats and observers, “We told you so”.

To those of you who were warned in one way or another, how do you feel now when you look at yourself in the mirror? Why did you do nothing?

I am so despondent and angry. My heart cries out for thousands in Uganda who continue to suffer unspeakable human rights violations and the millions who will continue to suffer from a corrupt regime.

One Ugandan wrote to me in desperation this morning saying, “We need more help from you people. Some of us can not go back to our country and meet our families. Our children are very young but we can not go back to a country were you know they kill you or abduct you.” What should I say to him?

Another has written: “The international community is always siding with the oppressive NRM regime, it reflects the unspeakable double standards and betrayal to Ugandans.  The international community only awaits to sign deals of supplying lethal weapons which Mr Museveni and his son brag about to use to dehumanise Ugandans.” Who in the UK government and other participating countries is going to answer these accustions?

To all of you who read this post, please share it widely (and the links for some of my earlier posts), especially if you have any way of making contact  with politicians or other relevant activists. Ugandans don’t have a voice – it is up to us to speak out for them. Sometimes I feel I am doing it all on my own and yet I have no influence nor the necessary contacts.

Bobi Wine and his wife have now been forcibly removed from their home in Kampala in the night after power was cut to their home and a helicopter landed in their garden. They have apparently been taken by helicopter to the remote town of Kisoro close to the Rwanda/DRC borders. What has happened to their young children who were at home with them?

This video gives a discrete glimpse of many ballot papers being ticked by two men, apparently in Lyantonde. If it is genuine, then it is an example of the vote rigging that has been taking place in Uganda. You will notice that they are ticking the bottom candidate every time. The photo below shows a sample presidential voting paper. And which candidate is at the bottom of the list? Yes, Yoweri Museveni. Draw your own conclusions. No wonder Museveni is claiming he received about 75% of the votes compared with about 20% for Bobi Wine.

Sky News has published a disturbing report in which their reporter says Kampala is “like a war zone”.
We all knew this is what was going to happen – and some of us tried in vain to alert the world. So what happens now?
I despair if the conclusion is that violence is the only way to remove a dictator and his cohort. And so will the majority of Ugandans despair as they don’t want to perpetuate violence – they are longing for peace and freedom, with opportunities for development for all.
